My first knowledge of Paronella Park was when it was featured on Burke's Backyard. We were living in Tasmania at the time and I remember thinking that if ever I made it
to North Queensland I would like to see more of this intriguing place.
Many years later my husband and I were travelling through Queensland in our campervan and I kept harping on about making sure we stopped in at Paronella Park. My
husband was a bit unsure as to whether the detour would be worth it but agreed to at least have a look on the condition that we only stay for an hour or two.
On our arrival to the car park we were greeted by Luke who assured us that our visit would be like no other experience in Australia. We took that as being promotional talk but the offer of a free nights stay in the caravan park was tempting so we gave it a shot.
The caravan park was not exactly 5 star but clean, peaceful and very private, our van was surrounded by lush tropical plants and we felt like we had the park to ourselves. Once settled in we took a stroll down to the park and that's where the love affair began. Both my husband and I were drawn into the magic of Paronella within minutes of entering the castle and surrounds.
While my husband was astounded and intrigued by the amount of work and ingenuity used to create such a masterpiece, I was really overwhelmed by the atmosphere in the ballroom and surrounding areas. I could almost see and hear the young soldiers playing tennis and the ladies, with sunhats and umbrellas, picnicking on the lawns.
We took part in every tour available and even did a couple twice. The night tour was amazing and the illuminated waterfall was a sight to behold. One enjoyable highlight was the bush tucker tour and indigenous dancing, these young people showed they were proud of their heritage and provided interesting insight into their culture.
We were so impressed with the park that we decided to stay another night and make the most of our time at Paronella. We reluctantly left the next morning, complaining about having to get home for work, but vowing that we will return whenever possible. Luke was right, we have never experienced anything to match Paronella in our travels since. Paronella park is certainly a "Hidden Jewel" and one that we hope to visit again very soon.
