Although I had heard about Paronella Park for a number of years, it was not until I saw a play in Cairns about the building of the Park by Jose Paronella that I became very curious and intrigued to see the home that he built for his bride. It was a really great experience and I loved walking around, learning about and exploring all of the things that Jose built. From Don Quixote I think of the song “to dream the impossible dream” – Jose made that dream possible with his wonderful imagination. He turned an ordinary patch of farmland into such a wonderland. It is such a peaceful place to visit.

I have been to Paronella Park on several occasions. The first time was about three years ago when I took my Mother there for Mother’s Day. Being unable to walk a great distance or cope with uneven ground and numerous steps, my Mother was driven around by the Park staff to see as much as was possible, which she really enjoyed. This was prior to cyclone Larry.

The devastation caused by cyclone Larry has not taken away the romantic aura of Paronella Park and still lures me to visit yet again. As I live in Cairns, the trip takes a little over an hour and I love to take visitors there as a special treat.

Since then, I have returned with overseas visitors, who loved the romantic feel and ambience of the park. On one of my visits, I brought Japanese students. I wanted them to understand the whole story, so we had a Japanese guide. I have been met with a very warm welcome each time I arrive and have always found the staff to be very friendly.

I have a ‘girl’ friend who held her wedding reception in the Castle, not long before it was burnt out. She also tells me of the wonderful dances her Mother and many of the locals attended, which were hosted by Jose and his bride.

I will be returning again in April and I am already looking forward to wandering around and soaking up the atmosphere.

From the roadway, Paronella Park does not look particularly special, however, when you take the time to stop and explore, you will find that it is definitely a ‘hidden jewel’.

I hope that some of my thoughts will be helpful to you in your quest for the tourism award. You have all worked so very hard to maintain Jose’s dream.
